Notes

From the search for cosmic enlightenment to tribal ceremony, from digging a hole to the simple act of waiting, Series 1 depicts stories about ritual and identity. Welcome Home and Real Ethereal serve as the prelude and epilogue respectively for a series that is also about birth, death, and worlds unreal.

Short Circuit: Series 1 represents a cross-section of some of the most daring and interesting films being made independently and completely outside of the mainstream of cinema. The films and filmmakers presented here offer an excellent glimpse at what the future of underground, independent cinema holds. The films in Series 1 exude the finest characteristics of independent and underground cinema: passion, formal experimentation, personal style, and a spirit of resistance to the status quo. These works strive to be something more than the typical and clichéd films we have come to expect from both Hollywood and mainstream independent cinema. Series 1 also offers a fine mix of narrative and experimental cinema; sometimes these two elements are fused together beautifully in the same film. As the first step in an ongoing experiment in forming a new and revolutionary alternative to the tightly controlled systems of exhibition and distribution, Series 1 is an eclectic, strange, and wonderful group of films from across the United States, which offers insight and exposure to filmmakers whom we believe have something new and important to say.
